EWINNER 1: Gdansk and Ostrow secure playoff places

After this weekend's matches there remains just one single tie left in the regular season. That match is played on Monday night when Rybnik travel to Krosno in a mouthwatering finale to the end of the regular season in League 1. It is a winner-takes-all match with the victor guararnteed first place in the table.

Back to today and, Ostrow and Gdansk's victories gave them semi-final place in the playoffs. They were two of the three home sides who won and you can see the full scores from Zuzelend by clicking on the match, below:

Lodz 52:38 Gneizno

Gdansk 49:41 Tarnow

Ostrow 54:36 Bydgoszcz

#LODGNI

In Lodz the match was primarily about pride. The home team have finished in sixth, whilst Gneizno are seventh in the league.

Australian, Brady Kurtz (13) top scored for Lodz today and also for the season with 2.164, putting him in eighth place overall. For Start it was Oskar Fajfer who tops the points for the season with 2.073, finishing just behind Kurtz in 11th place. The Pole is the model of consistency he scored 2.088 in 2021 which gave him 10th place. He has also made a vital contribution in Sweden, top scoring with Motala Piraterna.

American, Luke Becker can also be proud of his season with a 1.867 average for Lodz this year. It places him at 23rd alongside quality riders such as Vaclav Milik (20th) and Rohan Tungate (25th).

#GDATAR

Tarnow put up a good fight today. But 5:1s in Heat 11 and 15 sealed the victory for the home team, Gdansk.

It was the winning pairing from Heat 11 who top scored for the home side, Viktor Kulakov (11) and Jakub Jamrog (10+2). Meanwhile, the visitors can only say that the it has been a disastous year from the moment Niels Kristian Iversen crashed out in the very first heat of the season. With just one win they will be racing in League 2 in 2022.

#OSTBYD

For the losers, Bydgoszcz it was a missed opportunity to get to the semi-finals themselves. Whilst their U24 Danish rider, Andreas Lyager (12+2) and Russia's Vadim Taresenko (11) rose the challenge, it was not a strong enough team performance to win. Their next best rider scored just 5+1 and their team's top rider this season, David Bellego scored just 3 pts.

By contrast, Ostrovia had four riders who scored more than 9 points. Top scorer today was Sweden's Oliver Berntzon (pictured) who seems to have put the disappointment of the SGP series behind him to score 13 pts, one of his best outing this year.

EWINNER 2: Opole lead by 1 point after penultimate round

This weekend saw six more matches in the penultimate round of the eWinner 2 league. And it was three home wins in the meets which took place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Click on the result and you can see the full scores from Zuzelend:

Rawicz 49:41 Daugavpils

Opole 51:39 Rzeszow

Poznań 52:38 Wittstock

______________________________

#RAWDAU and #OPORZE

These results mean that the winners, who are placed first and second in the league are only one point apart, with Opole in first position today. Their Swedish rider, Jacob Thorssell (pictured) top scored again for the team and is in second place in the overall rankings with 2.487.

It now means that the team that wins their away match in Round 14 will almost certainly top the table at the end of the regular season.

For the losers, who are in positions four and five and therefore on ither side of the playoff qualifying "line", the results also mean it will go down to the last match to see who will join the teams in positions 1-3 in the playoffs. The question remains, can they winn their last match of the season at home? Whilst, Daugavpils are currently ahead of Rzeszow by 2 points now, they have the harder match next week when the will host league leaders, Opole. Stal have the easier tie when they travel to sixth placed Poznan.

_______________________________
#POZWIT

For Wittstock, this was their last meeting in League 2 for 2021 and they finished the season without a single win. Top scorer for the season, and Sunday's match, was Max Dilger with 1.700, which put him in 24th on the overall table.

Highlights for the Wolves including seeing Celine Liebmann become the first woman to score points in Polish speedway history and the ongoing development of Lukas Baumann (1.372, 37th), who will represent Germany in the forthcoming U21 World Championships.

For Poznan, their season is also nearly over as they are in sixth place needing to win away at Rzeszow next Saturday and have other results go in their favour if they are to make it to the placeoffs.

#LAN

Third placed Landshut did not race in Round 13 and will host Rawicz in their last match of the season next Sunday knowing that they are almost certainly guaranteed playoff speedway for 2021 regardless of the result.

ELITSERIEN: Round 13 - Smederna stay top with epic home win

There were three matches in Sweden tonight with bonus points also up for grabs. All three went down to the final heats to decide the match with two away and one home win.

On Thursday Rospiggarna will take on league leaders, Smederna at home whilst Vetlanda were able to rest this week.

---------------------------------

Piraterna 43 v 47 Indianerna #PIRIND

In Heat 2 Oskar Fajfer (12+1) crashed out in the first corner as he overgased the bike. He was excluded from the re-run which Kumla won with a 1:5. Piraterna never recovered from this and were chasing the whole match from behind. When the visitors’ Australian duo of Max Fricke (13) and Chris Holder (10+2) won Heat 14 with a 1:5 of their own, the match was over. Indianerna also took home the bonus point by 77-103 keeping their hopes of a playoff place alive, “We came here needing the win and we got a win,” said SGP rider, Fricke to Five One Racing at the end of the match.

Masarna 43 v 47 Västervik #MASWMSK

Two Heat advantages in the nominations heats was enough for Västervik to take victory away from home in Avesta tonight. The two sides were tied at 36:36 after Heat 12 but an 18-point maximum from Swedish SGP rider, Fredrik Lindgren, including in Heat 15 victory sealed the win for the east coast team. Top scorer for Masarna was Przemyslaw Pawlicki (12+1) but he could only manage second behind “Fast Freddie” in the matches final and deciding Heat. The visitors also won the bonus point by 80:100.

Smederna 46 v 44 Dackarna #SMEDDAC

Two of the title favourites met in the eagerly anticipated clash in Eskilstuna. It was Tai Woffinden’s debut for Dackarna and he was joining Maciej Janowski (7+2) and Jason Doyle to make a fearsome line up for the Målilla team.

As expected, the match was a close fought one with the visitors leading by just two points after Heat 8. However, when Smederna gained a 5:1 in Heat 12 it was the home team who led by two points going into the nomination heats. But when Jacob Thorssell (9+1) led Dackarna to a 1:5 in Heat 14, it left the scores were delicately balanced at 41:43 in the visitor’s favour.

Three of the four riders in the last Heat decider will be racing in the SGP in Målilla on Saturday. However, it was the only rider who will not be in the race, Grigori Laguta (10+2), who won the heat for Eskilstuna followed by the home side’s top Swedish rider, Pontus Aspgren (11+1, pictured) who beat both Doyle (13) and Woffinden (7) to create a 5:1. That meant that Eskilstuna won by 46:44, a win that keep them top of the table and makes them favourites to win a fourth Elitserien title in five years. Dackarna were just able to take the bonus point, 88:92.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Celina Liebmann - a woman at Wittstock

Last year, Celina Liebmann became the second woman to race in the Polish leagues after Sindy Weber started a match for Polonia Pila in 2019. But this year, on Friday 30 July, the 20 year old became the first woman in speedway history to score points in a Polish league match. She came in second place in Heat 2 behind fellow German, Norick Blödorn. He will represent the country at the Junior World Championships which start in their home nation on 4 September.

Liebmann is in her second year racing in eWinner 2 for German team, MSC Wölfe Wittstock, the Wolves, the club where Lukas Fienhage had a tremendous season in 2020. He is only two years older than Liebmann and, not surprisingly, she wants to emulate her former teammate.

So far she does not have an official heat average, but after six heats her score would be 0.333, “I am always happy when I can start in the league,” she tells us.

Like many other riders, she “caught” speedway from her family as her father was an ice speedway rider. She did at training session at the speedway track in Olching and is still racing for the club this season in the Bayern Cup as well as representing the Black Forest Eagles for the Team Cup.

But wasn’t it much harder to race in Poland’s famous third division than in Germany?

“It wasn't harder than I thought in the Polish league,” she says matter-of-factly, “I knew it was going to be tough, but you always need a challenge to get better. The best thing, of course, was that I'm the first woman to score points in the Polish league,” she adds with understandable pride. She goes on, “Now, I'm hoping for more appearances in the Polish league to get even better”.

Perhaps surprisingly, however, the 20 year old’s major goal for the season was not related to her performances in Poland but back home in Germany, “I've already achieved my goal for 2021. I wanted to be among the top six in the German U21 championship”.

That competition has already happened at her home track, Olching on 18 July. It was won by her Wittstock teammate, Lukas Baumann who, like second placed Blödern, has gone on to qualify for the Junior World Championships.

“I did it! I finished fifth,” she says triumphantly.

Liebmann is leading the way for woman in world of speedway. Let’s hope there are many following in her wake in our great sport.

U19 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP: Gusts best in Europe

Strength in Europe

Since 2011 only two non-Europeans have medalled in the Junior World Championships – Jaimon Lidsey and Max Fricke – meaning that the lineups for the U21 European Championships and the World Championships can be very similar. Indeed, four of finalists in the 2021 competition have already medalled in the most European Junior Championships- Wiktor Lampart (Gold, 2019, Silver 2018); Jakub Miskowiak (Silver, 2020); Alexander Woentin (Bronze, 2020); Mads Hansen (Bronze, 2019).

U19 European Championships

However, in 2021 the FIM have decided not to have a U21 European Championship but only an U19 competition. And some of the competitors we will meet on 4 September in Straslund also have competed in this competition too.

For example, Jan Kvech from the Czech Republic won the U19 European Championship in 2020 beating, among others, Latvia’s Ernest Matjusonoks and Francis Gusts as well as Frenchman, Steven Goret.

And this weekend the 2021 European U19 Championship was decided in Riga, Latvia.

Gusts best in Europe

Matjusonoks and Gusts were in action again on home shale as well as four of the five reserve riders for the global competition. So that meant Petr Chulpac (Czech Republic), Philip Hellström Bängs (Sweden), Norick Bloedorn (Germany) and Drew Kemp (Great Britain) were all on the start line in Riga this weekend.

Bloedorn finished in 15th and Chulpac 9th, but otherwise the top five in this U19 competition was dominated by riders who will be in this year’s U21 World Championships.

It was Latvia’s Gusts who won Gold in his home country in impressive style, dropping just one point in his five heats. In second place, after a race off, was Hellström-Bängs who beat Poland’s Mateusz Cierniak who had to be satisfied with the bronze. Outside the medals by just one point was Kemp in 4th whilst Matjusonoks finished in 5th.

Gusts and his compatriot and Lokamotiv Daugavpils teammate Matjusonoks are the only riders at Riga who will compete in the U21 World Championships as permanent riders. But this outing shows that there is some serious talent waiting in the wings should anyone be injured before 4th September. But the question remains, will Gusts be able to turn his European Gold to a World Championship medal?

NB that the picture is of David Bellego, Francis Gusts' teammate in Swedish club, Avesta Masarna.

ELITSERIEN: Indianerna lose whilst Dackarna win in Thursday's matches

There were two matches in the Bauhaus Elitserien in Sweden this Thusrday night as Kumla Indianerna and Hallstavik Rospiggarna took part in their first match this week whilst Dackarna and Gislaved Lejonen both took part in thier second match in Målilla.

Both Indianerna and Dackarna used Riders' Replacement as they were missing their Australian Grand Prix riders, Max Fricke and Jason Doyle, who are prepare themselves for the SGP double header in Lublin this weekend.

Indianerna v Rospiggarna #INDROS

Before the match started both teams were on 7 points in sixth and seventh place with Rospiggarna ahead on points scored in this important bottom of the table clash in Kumla. The bonus point was almost certainly going back with the Hallstavik team after their convincing 54:36 win at home earlier this year.

Former World Champion, Chris Holder (pictured) put in an excellent performance for the home team scoring 18+1 from seven heats. But the team missed Fricke and Rospiggarna took advantage when Kumla's Swedish riders were on the startline to collect two 1:5s to be leading by six points at the end of Heat 5.

The visitors manage to increase thier lead by another two points when Kumla's U21 Swedish champion, Gustav Grahn, was excluded from Heat 13 and the final score was 41:49. Rospiggarna took 3 pts in total with the aggregate scores 103:77 and their top scorer, Zielona Gora's Patryk Dudek with 13 pts from five heats.

Dackarna v Lejonen #DACLEJ

Both teams came into this match with a loss on Tuesday with differing pressures on the teams. For the visiting Lejonen, the is need to bounce back and keep up the fight on winning the league table against an impressive Smederna. For the home side, they need to rise above the embarassing defeat at the hands of Masarna and show fans they are still a team to reckon with. The home side also had a cushion in regard to the bonus point having won the match 40:50 in Gislaved.

When Lejonen's Australian rider, Rohan Tungate (13+1) took the chequered flag first with Polish teammates, Jakub Miskowiak (8) and Grzegorz Walasek (10+1) behind in Heats 7 and 11, it looked like the visitors might finally catch up with the home team. But Dackarna were too strong throughout even without their top Australian, Doyle. Just as on Tuesday it was Luke Becker who top scored for the Målilla side this time with an impressive 14+2. He was again well supported by Jacob Thorssell (11+1). But the difference tonight was the whole team were on point. For example, Danish riders Fredrik Jacobsen (10+2) and Rasmus Jensen (12+2) also scoring in double points with the latter making up for a poor show in Avesta with just 2 pts.

It mean that Dackarna won convincingly 51:39 and took the bonus point 101:79 silencing the critics and also putting a question mark on Lejonen's quest for a 2021 championship win.

ALLSVENSKAN: Round 7 - Indianerna remain top

All six teams in Allsvenskan were able to race tonight with good weather in Norrköping, Nyköping and Eskilstuna.

And this week we should be treated to another match as Team Rapid host Griparna in Eskilstuna on Friday in a rescheduling of their Round 3 match.

______________________________

Norrköping Vargarna v Hagfors Valsarna #VARVAL

Form from before the match continued tonight as the visitors from Hagfors continue in winning ways, taking the tie 42:48 despite the scores being locked at 39:39 with just two heats to go. For the home side, the frustation of another near miss victory at home means they only have 2 points out of six matches so far this season.

Vargarna had been in the lead upto Heat 5 when the visitors new British signing, Leon Flint (7) took to the track for the first time ever in Sweden to lead out a 1:5 for Valsarna. And whilst the hosts drew level through a 5:1 of their own in Heat 11, they were denied a victory with two heat advantages from the visitors in the final two heats. It was Valsarna's top scorers, Victor Palovaara (14) and Finland's Jesse Mustonen (9+1) who won the Heat 15 to take the victory 42:48. They beat Vargarna's top riders, Mattias Thörnblom (12) and William Björling (11). The younger Swede put out his best performance of the year probably boosted by his excellent fourth place in the Swedish U21 finals on Saturday.

Full scores see SVEMO website.

Nyköping Griparna v Kumla Indianerna B #GRIIND

The home side's Kim Nilsson continued to show why he is the league's top scorer, collecting a 15 pts maximum. It means he has only dropped one point in four matches for the Nyköping side and has an almost impossible average of 2.950 after racing 20 heats. In the final heat tonight he was joined by Peter Ljung, who scored his second paid maximum in two days, this time collecting 14+1.

A 5:1 in Heat 2 put the visiting Indianerna behind from the start and they never recovered. Newly crowned Swedish U21 Champion, Gustav Grahn (8+1, pictured) and Joel Andersson (9+1) twice scored heat advantages for the away team, but it was not enough and the Indians were defeated 52:38. They do however maintain the top spot in the division partly by virtue of being the only team to have played all 7 of their matches.

Full scores see SVEMO website.

Team Rapid v Smålänningarna #TEASMÅ

Oliver Berntzon was due to start his first match for Smålänningarna, however, he was surprisingly replaced on the day by Zielona Gora's U24 rider, Damian Pawliczak for the team who are currently winless after 6 rounds. And the Polish rider showed his class top scoring for the visitors with 13 points on his Swedish debut.

However, his success did not translate to a victory for the visitors despite the fact that they lead the tie 18:24 after Heat 7. Instead it was Team Rapid who won the tight match by collecting three 5:1s in Heat 8-11 and holding on to their two point lead through the nomination heats. It was former Swedish ice racer, Daniel Henderson (13), who top scored for the Eskilstuna team as they won narrowly 44:46.

ELITSERIEN: Round 12 Smederna tame the Lions in Gislaved

This week six of the teams had matches on Tuesday, whilst Rospiggarna are due to travel to Kumla on Thursday to face Indianerna.

Lejonen v Smederna

It was a warm and beautiful night for speedway as the top two teams in the league met in Gislaved. Smederna had a four-point cushion coming into the match after winning their home tie 47:43.

From the start it was the league leaders from Eskilstuna who took control of the match when Kasper Woryna and Michael Jepsen Jensen (pictured) took a 1:5 in the very first Heat.

They never let up and it was not until Heat 9 that the home team managed to get a heat advantage when Rohan Tungate and Jaroslaw Hampel took a 4:2.

It was this pairing that would get Lejonen’s only 5:1 in the match. But that was in Heat 15 and it was already too late as Smederna took the win and the bonus point with ease. Final score was 43:47 (86:94 on aggregate).

TOP SCORERS:

Masarna v Dackarna

Dackarna travelled to Avesta with a much-weakened team without their Wroclaw SGP riders and having to use Rider’s Replacement for Jason Doyle. That meant the first match of the season for Finnish rider, Tero Aarnio but the good news was that captain Jacob Thorssell was back after injuring himself at the Swedish national championship.

For the home side, Antonio Lindbäck was back in the team, but had a lot to do to win the bonus point having lost 55:35 in Målilla.

However, the Brazilian born Sweden and former SGP rider put in his best performance of the season. He was joint top scorer with 12+1 delighting the 1000 fans and humiliating the visitors with a 61:29 home win. Masarna scored five 5:1s in a row in the last five heats in the match! That meant that the 2020 Swedish champions took the bonus point as well 96:84.

Dackarna may have three world class riders in Doyle, Maciej Janowski and Tai Woffinden on their roster. But tonight, they showed that without them they are vulnerable. Behind the big names, it was only American Luke Becker and Thorssell (10+1) who stepped up in an otherwise extremely disappointing meeting for Dackarna.

Vetlanda v Piraterna

In the first match of the season Vetlanda won a close match in Motala, 42:48. But Piraterna travelled to Vetlanda with just six riders and were without Oskar Fajfer or the British rider, Adam Ellis. However, Mateusz Tonder started only his third match for the visitors.

Vetlanda had a full-strength team lead by Bartosz Zmarzlik fresh from his double win at Wroclaw in the SGP series at the weekend.

Piraterna were certainly happy when the match was stopped after Heat 4 because of rain. They had scored just 5 points and were behind 19:5 when the weather paused the meeting.

But with nearly an hour’s break it made no difference, Vetlanda totally dominated the meeting. Piraterna were hopeless as Vetlanda won every single heat and took 14 heat advantages on the night to run out winners by an embarrassing 69:21.

Zmarzlik scored a maximum and both Brady Kurtz (14+1) and Peter Ljung (12+3) took paid maximums in what was the Swedish veterans best match of the season.

SGP Worlds: Madsen biggest loser after Saturday’s wash out

Triple header in Prague

Billed as a double header in Prague, the 2021 FIM Speedway Grand Prix actually started with three days of racing in the Czech capital after Saturday’s Round 2 was abandoned after Heat 11 due to heavy rainfall. According to SGP rules, at least 16 heats must have been completed for the results to have carried over to Sunday’s meeting. So fans in Prague were treated to a full 23 heats before Artem Laguta (pictured) was crowned champion and Maciej Janowski declared as the current leader of the series on Sunday afternoon. The Polish rider leads Laguta and fellow Russian, Emil Sayfutdinov by six points after the first two rounds.

Good racing; bad planning?

SGP Race Director, Phil Morris kept to the rules, but with bad weather forecast in Prague it meant that there was always a good chance the meet would never make it to Heat 16, despite the best efforts of the racing staff.

It could be argued that the fans won out getting to see the best riders in the world race 57 heats against each other over three days. Alternatively, the SGP organisation might consider it was bad publicity for the sport to have a half finished event.

In any case, we can say that there were both winners and losers to prematurely stopping a round and starting again from scratch the following day.

Losers

The definite loser in the decision to cancel Saturday night’s event was Leon Madsen who had a maximum 9 pts from three heats on Saturday and was in first place when the competition was abandoned.

By contrast, at the end of Sunday’s Round 2, the Danish rider only had one heat win, had amassed just 7 pts and finished in 10th place with no chance of taking part in the semifinals.

Likewise, Tai Woffinden also had a worse time of it on Sunday finishing just above Madsen in ninth. When the Round was interrupted prematurely he was fifth placed having scored 6 pts from three heats.

Winners
However, at the same time as some lost out, there were also winners among some of the riders who benefitted from an extra night’s sleep and a fresh start. They were primarily Martin Vaculik and Anders Thomsen. The Slovenian had just 3 pts from three heats, whilst the Danish rider had failed to score at all by Saturday’s Heat 11.

The restart was the perfect remedy for these two as they raced their way to the semifinals on Sunday more than tripling their scores with 10 pts and 9 pts respectively. For both riders it was their best result of the series so far.

Next Rounds in Wroclaw

The first two rounds of this year’s SGP were won by Sparta Wroclaw riders, Janowski and Laguta. And in two weeks time we will travel their southwest Poland city for another double header in Rounds 3 and 4 of the World Championships. With home track advantage no-one will be surprised if the same two names finish off at the top of the podiums again as they did in 2020s double header in the town. So, all things being equal these two should also continue to be the leading riders in the SGP series by 10 pm on Saturday 31 July (weather permitting).

SGP WORLDS: Form check before the championship

Tonight the 2021 FIM Speedway Grand Prix finally gets underway with the first of a double header in Prague. The series will consist of 11 rounds in 2021 including a number of back to back meetings in the same venue, as tonight.

Three in a row for Zmarzlik?

Bartosz Zmarzlik, the current World Champion, is looking to retain the title to make it the third championship in a row. And whilst he is many people's favourite for the 2021 series, and whilst he is the top scorer in Sweden's Elitserien, he is not actually the best rider in the Ekstraliga. We take a brief look at the individual standings in Poland's and Sweden's top league to give a feel for the riders' form coming into tonight's event. In both leagues Zmarzlik, Maciej Janowski and Artem Laguta occupy the top three spots for riders who are going to participate in the SGP.

Ekstraliga

It will be of no surprise that 10 of the top 16 riders in the Ekstraliga are already in the SGP with Janusz Kolodziej and Nicki Pedersen the only riders who are in the Top 10 who are not in World Championships this year.

Elitserien

The last few years have seen a trend for the SGP riders to not race in Sweden with half of the Top 10 in the 2020 World Championships not competing in the Elitserien. Most notable of these was Sweden's own Fredrik Lindgren. However, this year has seen a return of many riders to the top league in Sweden particularly as the regular season in Poland comes to an end. Although the Ekstraliga's rules that mean you can only race in one country outside Poland has meant that the Danish riders have almost all decided to race in their home country, including Leon Madsen and Anders Thomsen as well as the newly crowned European champion, Mikkel Michelsen who will have to wait until 2022 to return to the SGP Series. However, in the last few weeks Emil Sayfutdinov has signed for Rospiggarna and Lindgren makes a return, this time to Västervik.

Whilst these last two riders have not yet acquired an officical average, let's take a look at the scorers so far for those SGP riders who have been racing in Elitserien:
