EKSTRALIGA: Champions under pressure in Sunday’s racing

#GORCZE

Częstochowa surprise Gorzow at home as former league leaders lose two in a row.

The match started off as you would expect with the hosts going ahead and holding a narrow lead, 22:20 after Heat 7, where Bartosz Zmarzlik (9+1) showed that he is still human by coming second behind Częstochowa junior, Mateusz Swidnicki (5+1).

However, the match turned towards the guests’ favour with heat advantages in Heat 10 and 12 to give Częstochowa a six point lead, 33:39 going into the nomination heats.
But it wasn’t the team’s SEC pairing of Leon Madsen (5+1) and Bartosz Smektala (2+1) who led the charge. Instead, junior Jakub Miskowiak (14) was again the team’s lead scorer dropping just one point in the match. He won both heats 10 and 12 to turn the match.

Gorzow put up a good fight with a 5:1 in Heat 14 through Zmarzlik and Anders Thomsen (8+2). But with a 3:3 from Fredrik Lindgren (9+1) and Kacper Woryna (10+2) in the last heat it was enough to secure the unexpected win from Częstochowa. The Polish rider can also be pleased that it was by far his best performance of 2021.

Wroclaw lead from the start in the clash of the heavyweights against current champions, Leszno.

The hosts led from Heat 2 and looked in control with Maciej Janowski (14, photo, centre) again riding a near perfect race and Tai Woffinden (7) back in the line up. It was the British three times world champion that won heat 7, ably backed up by Artem Laguta (10+1) as Wroclaw won their second 5:1 of the night to give them a 24:18 lead that they never gave up.

The final result was 47:43, with a Heat 15 1:5 from Leszno to make it look more even than it was. Janusz Kolodziej (12) was their top scorer, but Australian’s Jason Doyle (8+2) and Jaimon Lidsey (5+1) played their part, even if they could not topple the home team. Dan Bewley (7), fresh from qualifying for the SEC yesterday also had another good ride for the winners.
